SATURDAY 15th  SEPTEMBER

“THE QUEEN”
(12A) L 100 mins. GB/FR/IT 2006  Director: Stephen Frears

Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell, Sylvia Sims

Helen Mirren won an Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth II during the time following the death of Princess Diana.  It shows the effect on the monarchy and the main political figures (Sheen is Tony Blair).  As the Telegraph said "the most gripping picture of the year".

SATURDAY 20th OCTOBER

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING followed by refreshment break and then ...

“THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA”  (PG) 109 mins. US 2006  Director: David Frankel

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt

Streep ran Dame Helen close in the Oscars.  Set in the office of "Runway" fashion magazine, Meryl Streep is the editor and the staff communicate in hisses and catty meows.  The film is frothy but very enjoyable.

SATURDAY 17th NOVEMBER

“MISS POTTER”  (PG) 92 mins. GB/US  2006  Director: Chris Noonan

Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, Emily Watson, Lucy Boynton

Zellweger plays Beatrix Potter as an adult and Boynton plays her as a child.  It tells the enchanting story of Beatrix's childhood and delight in animals discovered mainly in the Lake District.  She tells stories to a friend's children which she illustrates herself.  Her romance with Norman Warne (McGregor) ends tragically but she finds happiness in the Lake District and marries a country Solicitor.

SATURDAY 8th DECEMBER

“HISTORY BOYS” (15)  SC, L 109 mins. GB 2006  Director: Nicholas Hytner

Richard Griffiths, Dominic Cooper, Stephen Campbell Moore

Film version of Alan Bennett play, using many of the original stage cast, is about some precocious 6th form boys studying for a special exam that could lead to Oxbridge.  Based in the mid 1980s,  the young cast is excellent - Cooper is the heart-throb, Griffiths and Campbell Moore the teachers.  A very funny and thoughtful film.

SATURDAY 19th JANUARY

“DRIVING LESSONS” (15) SC, L  98 mins. GB  2006 Director: Jeremy Brock

Julie Walters, Rupert Grint

Grint is a confused and stifled 17 year old son of a vicar and his do-gooder wife (Nicholas Farrelll and Laura Linney).  He is given driving lessons by an ex-Shakespearian actress (Julie Walters).  Set in Hampstead and Edinburgh with music by Sufjan Stevens played by folk guirtarist, John Redbourn.

SATURDAY 16th FEBRUARY

“KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS” (U)  106 mins. GB 1949 Director : Robert Hamer

Denis Price,  Alec Guiness,  Joan Greenwood, Valerie Hobson.

This classic Ealing Studio's production from Britain's Golden Age of film comedies, has Price gradually making his way to a Dukedom by eliminating 8 members of the D'Ascoyne family who stand in his way (all played by the wonderful Alec Guiness).  A movie treat.

SATURDAY 15th MARCH

“CASINO ROYALE” (12A) SC, N, V 144 mins. GB/US/GER/CZ  2006  Director: Martin Campbell

Daniel Craig, Judy Dench, Eva Green

The best James Bond for years  but much grimmer.  The action goes to Venice, Madagascar, Prague and  Uganda but there are no space-age rockets or plans to seize the world.  There is however, Mads Mikkelsen as an Albanian chess prodigy turned terrorist who plays a huge poker game (with Bond and others) to build up his funds.

There will be a refreshment interval during the film

SATURDAY 19th APRIL

“THE PRESTIGE” (12A)  V 139 mins. GB/US  2006 Director: Christopher Nolan

Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlet Johansson, Christian Bale

A Victorian thriller about rival magicians in a battle of wits.  As novices together they cause the death of Jackman's wife and even after that, he tries to get the upper hand of Bale.  Watch out for David Bowie as a Serbian inventor!
